Mirelle
and I decided to go on a little road trip. First was a visit to Canberra,
followed by a drive up the south coast
of Australia. OK, so it wasn't the best part of Oz. And we didn't spend
our time wisely (ended up in some really shading places) but we did have
a fun couple of days outside of Sydney.
First we went to Canberra. It's the capital
and is known as a really boring town. We went because it is the town I lived
in for the longest next to New York. 6 years to be exact (1 to 7 years). We
drove past the home
where I took my first step, learnt how to ride a bicycle and enjoyed my first
dog. We also went by the first
school (i have this exact picture taken 20 years prior!) I went to. Then
we visited some of my parents old friends, Serge
and Remi Ou and Jill
and Norm Hoffman. It was great to see them, even if they only remember me
as a little kid! I enjoyed it a ton, weird to go back after 17 years.
Canberra is inland so we head to the coast. Drove through typical dry
and hot Australia countryside. Stopped at a couple of cute towns
along the way. Finally got to Batemans Bay and it was horrible. Bad beaches
and a worse nightlife. Checked into the gross hostel and drove down to the
Mogo
Zoo. Disappointing but we did see a Kangaroo and a baby Koala! Met 2 great
Irish guys, Brian and Garreth. Found the only place in town to have a drink
past 11pm and it was the local club house that has cheap drinks and allows
gambling. Strange place. I also managed to forget my bag with all my clothes
in the hostel in Canberra. In the end it turned out that these guys went to
Canberra and picked it up! The rest of the holiday we just drove up the coast, stopping in Ulladulla,
Jervis
Bay, Nowra, and Wollongong. Good fun.
Got back and partied the weekend in Sydney. Went snorkelling
just down the road at Gordon's Bay. Met up with Brian
and Garreth on Friday. Saturday was a trip. Got home at 7am to be woken
at 11am to venture out into the Sydney harbour on a sail
boat. Absolutely amazing. We went on the sail boat that the New Zealand
Defense Force was sailing in the Sydney to Hobart. It's a sailing race that
starts in the Harbour every Boxing Day (December 26th for the Americans). We
sailed around the Harbour, went out to sea for a little and then docked in the
bay for lunch and a swim. Absolutely fabulous!
And
with that! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
